Robert R. Blake and
Jane S. Mouton published the book The Managerial Grid in
1964. This text has been one of the most popular management and leadership
tools, and is used extensively today. When asked "what is your management
style?" many managers use the concept of The Managerial Grid to
answer.
The Managerial Grid
uses concepts and paradigms of
many of the previous studies outlined in this module. As we have seen in
this module, the findings of the Ohio State,
Michigan State, Likert
and others found two functions which distinguish management
styles. Blake and Mouton also identified two functions:
The task
function or concern for production. |
The
relationship function or concern for people
These are used as
axis to create a grid as shown below.
Five leadership styles are identified by the grid: |
1.1
Impoverished Managers
Low concern for production, low concern
for people. |
1.9
Country Club Managers
High concern for people, low concern for
production |
9.1 Task Managers
High concern for production, low concern
for people |
5.5 Middle of the Road Managers
Medium concern for production, medium
concern for people |
9.9 Team Managers
High concern for production, high concern for people |
