Meet My Orange

 

Objectives

To increase awareness of individual differences

To increase use of all the human senses

 

Group Size

Up to twenty people; if more, create several groups of equal size

 

Time Required

Thirty minutes

 

Physical Setting

Chairs; a table

 

Materials Utilized

One orange per participant

 

Content and Process

1.  Form a large circle.  Give an orange to each person.

2.  Explain that, like people, no two oranges are alike.  Give them two minutes to “get acquainted” with their own orange.  Suggest that they study in first with their eyes, then close their eyes and feel it carefully.

3.  Form dyads.   Individuals are to “introduce” their orange to their partner, pointing out its uniqueness.  Suggest they exchange oranges to help “get acquainted” better.

4.  Ask the total group to come together again.  Collect the oranges, mix them up, and spread them out on a table.  Ask the participants to find their own orange again.

5.  Ask the participants to take chairs and form groups of four to six to discuss the activity. To extend the use of the orange symbol, have groups create metaphors or analogies. Example: Starting college is like eating an orange because________________.
