Significant People in the Fields

Carl Rogers

Carl Ransom Rogers (January 8, 1902 – February 4, 1987) was an influential American psychologist and among the founders of the humanistic approach to psychology. Rogers is widely considered to be one of the founding fathers of psychotherapy research and was honored for his pioneering research with the Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions by the American Psychological Association in 1956.

According to Carl Rogers, effective facilitators:
bulletestablish the initial mood or climate of the group or class experience
bulletclarify the purpose of learning for each individual in the class as well as the more general purposes of the group
bulletdriver:  rely on the desire of each learner to implement purposes with meaning for the individual learner as the motivational force behind significant learning
bulletorganize the widest possible range of resources for the learner
bulletact as a flexible resource to be used by the group
bulletaccept both the intellectual content and the emotional attitudes to provide the appropriate degree of emphasis to the individual or group
bulletact as participant learners
bulletaccept their own limitations
